BCAM Speakers' Bureau
BCAM has two power point presentations. The first is entitled "Breast Cancer As We See It."
This is a four-part presentation covering basic historical facts about the disease and its risk factors, a summary of the reasons for the emergence of new and unknown chemicals in our environment, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of mammography, breast self-examination (BSE) and clinical breast examination (CBE), and finally, an explication of the Precautionary Principle and its potential impact on priorities for breast cancer research. (Where a shorter presentation is needed, the section on mammography, BSE and CBE can be omitted.) The second presentation is entitled "The Beast of Beauty: Toxic Ingredients in Cosmetics." This is a presentation about safe cosmetics, labelling, and the right to know.
For organizations that don't have facilities for power point, a series of placards have been produced and these, used on an easel, offer similar visual accompaniment for smaller groups. The volunteer speakers, thus far, are Rose Alper, Avis Antel, Deena Dlusy-Apel, Diana Bruno, Fiona Hanley, Myra Heyman, Chris Kupka, Carol Secter, Carole Summers, and Janine O'Leary Cobb — any two of whom will respond to requests.
We hope that other BCAM members will volunteer as the need grows.
Last season our speakers gave the presentation to a dozen different groups, and we are hopeful that other groups will contact us as word of this service spreads.
