Introducing Project False Hope: Combatting Cancer Fraud

Chris Kupka

The Internet is a wonderful resource for discovering information concerning cancer and its treatment. There is good, reliable information available but there are also numerous sites that provide misleading and often harmful advice. Some of the worst seem to be those that offer miracle cures or questionable treatment options. It is easy to be seduced by clever marketing practices.
In order to help the consumer identify more accurate information on the Internet, the Competition Bureau of Canada has launched Project False Hope.
Its web page features interactive tools that can assist in learning to spot the signs of fraudulent online cancer treatment and cures.
Because the Bureau also would like to know about any sites that appear to be offering health-related products or services that seem too good to be true, the consumer can report the site in question.
