Ninth Fundraising March held by Greenfield Park Girl Guides

Maychai Brown

On the chilly evening of May 3rd, the Guides, Sparks and Brownies of Greenfield Park gathered at a local park for their ninth march to raise funds for BCAM. A contingent of BCAM members and staff were honoured to participate in this event which has become a rite of spring. Although the origins of the march have dimmed with time, we believe the South Shore Guides started it after BCAM member, Ginette Boucher, a registered nurse, met with a group of their members to answer questions about breast cancer.

After the march, I spoke to Emily Elizabeth DiMilo, age 16, a senior member of the Guide movement who rode alongside and positioned her bike to stop cars as the marchers passed by. Emily figures she must have been at the first march in 1998 as a young Brownie and has been marching every year thereafter. She says, "At seven or eight, you don't really realize why you are marching; it's just fun; but now that I know people who have had breast cancer and I know what it's about." She went on to say that she has always appreciated the BCAM ladies who come to Greenfield Park to participate in the event.

To Emily and everyone else involved in the march, the BCAM ladies appreciate you!
