Safe Cosmetics Rally Of May 16th
Vivia Chow and Felicity Tepper
It was a bitterly cold day but a few brave souls from BCAM dug out their winter clothes—scarves, hats—to stand at the corner of Peel and Ste. Catherine and deliver a message: Although cosmetics labelling regulations had been in place for six months, we are still woefully ignorant of the ingredients in cosmetics.
Radio Canada arrived to interview us – one of the lead items in that evening’s news. And there was also some coverage in local newspapers.
We met some interesting people. One woman left the warmth of her office to request five of each of the handouts to share with her colleagues. Another person asked for several copies in both French and English to give to his family members. We engaged some high school students in discussion, hoping that they would take up the challenge and talk about it at their school and to friends and relatives.
Despite a wintry day in May, we were left with very positive feelings about this event. We distributed a lot of cards and information, talked to a lot of people, caught the eye of many more, and got more media coverage for BCAM.
