A Shift In Position From The Canadian Cancer Society
Rose Alper
We are pleased that the Canadian Cancer Society has recently adopted a long-standing fundamental BCAM position, namely, the precautionary principle. They state that they “use the precautionary principle when developing positions, which states that when an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause-and-effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.”
We were also pleased to see that the Canadian Cancer Society, responding to wide public demand relating to asbestos, has called upon “ the federal government to adopt a comprehensive asbestos strategy, including the eventual phasing out of both the use and export of this substance.” (July 11/07).
Dare we hope that the Canadian Cancer Society will continue to use its considerable influence and join other organizations advocating to have toxins, hormone disruptors, etc., banned from consumer products so that cancer can be stopped before it starts?
